Princess Thanya continues her laundry series with this latest recipe for frugal homemade fabric softener.  I whipped up a batch of this in under 10 minutes, and that included waiting for the water to boil.  This recipe is frugal.  If you prefer a green, natural choice, check out the recipe for DIY Homemade Natural Fabric Softener and also check out the recipe for DIY Homemade Laundry Detergent.

Princess T…This is the year I determined to save more money, that is my main goal.

Well yeah that and weightloss, but I can talk about that in another post ☺

So far I’ve made my own detergent and green natural fabric softener  Now I am making Frugal DIY Fabric Softener.

I discovered that this recipe for DIY fabric softener is made out of ingredients you may already have at home if  you regularly coupon.  Do you stockpile?  That free conditioner that you have snagged will be very useful.  If not, the ingredients are very basic and cheap.  Check the dollar store, or look for some coupons for hair conditioner and vinegar.

What do you need?

1 Bucket or large pot

6 cups of hot water

3 cups of white vinegar

2 cups (16 ounces) of hair conditioner (about 1 bottle of bargain conditioner)

1359041566796

Bring the water in the pot just to a boil, then pour the water into a bucket, add the vinegar, add the hair conditioner and stir until the conditioner is fully combined.  THAT’S IT!

No really, THAT’S IT

Kinda makes you upset that this stuff costs so much, right?

1359041615119

Once the mixture cools, pour it into an empty container of fabric softener or another jug. I used a washed out lemonade jug.  Just make sure to mark what is in the jug!

 Homemade DIY Laundry Fabric Softener

You only need to use 1/4 cup per load.  Your laundry comes out fresh smelling and soft.

I personally would like more fragrance but it might be the brand of conditioner I bought.  Experimenting with different brands or adding some essential oil would up the fragrance factor.

I went to the Dollar Tree and spent $2 for this recipe.  It makes 88 oz total. You need 1/4 cup or 2 oz per load.  That’s 44 loads of laundry for $2 and about 5 minutes of your time.  About .04 cents a load or even less since for the most part on a good sale week we can get the conditioner for free or 50 cents, so it could be as low as .01-.02 cents a load.

Saving can not get any easier!

What’s next for me?  I’m going to whip up some DIY Stain Spray.  Stay Tuned…

Leave some comments to let us know what other things you want to learn to make yourself, either to be green or to be thrifty.  We will be tackling a new project every week in 2013.  Check out some of the other Tips from Couponista Queen.

Happy from her first foray into DIY homemade laundry detergent,  Princess T’s research has continued with a search for a homemade fabric softener that is natural, green, and environmentally friendly…

Princess T…   I found all sorts of recipes for DIY fabric softener.  Many people just use straight vinegar as fabric softener but I just can’t.  My husband doesn’t like the smell one bit.  But if you want to try this, I’ve read 1/2 a cup per load does the trick.

While researching, I ran into this recipe for homemade, natural, green fabric softener a lot so I decided to give it a shot.

Natural/Green fabric softener:

8 cups of water

1 cup baking soda

6 cups white vinegar

10-15 drops of essential oil or not your choice, I added lavender to this batch, mainly to cover the vinegar smell.

1358881424992

I went to Dollar Tree and spent $3 on supplies.  You will need 2 bottles of vinegar but only use 1-1/2.

This recipe batch will make enough for 22.5 loads of laundry, you need 1/3 cup per load.  13 cents a load, not breaking the bank but not cheap when you can score that with a coupon and a good sale.  It might not be cheaper but it is more natural.

So what did I do?  I mixed it together in a large bucket, it will FIZZ when you add the baking soda, do it slowly to avoid a big mess!

1358881479146

I found an empty container and used my trusty funnel and in it went.  I went on a search for the smelliest thing I could wash.  Luckily, Patrick my mom’s dog needed a bath ☺ he was volunteered to get a bath so I could have smelly dog towels!

1358881507110

This load of smelly towels was washed with the homemade liquid laundry detergent I made the other day, and I added 1/3 cup of the fabric softener to the rinse cycle.  One thing I did notice was that the towels straight out of the washer smelled clean, they didn’t smell like the lavender oil drops I added and it didn’t smell like vinegar (and neither does my jug so that’s a huge plus).  The towels out of the dryer were fresh smelling and soft, so this recipe did what it was supposed to do.  I did not smell any traces of my lavender drops so that may have neutralized the vinegar smell and I need to add more drops.  I do like a clean, neutral smell so I may leave as is for now or add more if I make another batch.

The baking soda will settle so you will need to shake your container at each use.  Will I continue using this?  I’m not sure.  Everything came out smelling good but I still have another recipe to try, for frugal homemade fabric softener, and then I’ll decide.  But if you want to keep a more natural approach to your laundry this might be the way to go.

Homemade Orange Apple Simmering Potpourri

Homemade Orange Apple Simmering Potpourri – Easy to make and makes your house smell wonderful.

I love when my home smells warm and inviting, especially on these cold Winter days and nights.  Potpourri has its origins in times when people and places were not so fresh.   Potpourri was created in the 12th century for the purpose of freshening rooms in castles for the people of that time.  (Read more about the History of Potpourri)

Homemade potpourri can be made from all kinds of things.  I decided to make one today that is a great stovetop simmering potpourri recipe.

To make this Orange Apple Simmering Potpourri, you will need to mix and heat to simmering in a 2-quart pan:

  • 5 cups of water

  • 1 Orange sliced and 1 Apple sliced.  Leave the peel on both but seed the apple.

  • 3 Cinnamon sticks (Substitute 2 Teaspoons of Ground Cinnamon if you don’t have sticks)

  • 1 Tablespoon of All Spice  (Learn ► What is All Spice?)

  • 1 Tablespoon of Whole Cloves (Substitute 1 Teaspoon of Ground Cloves if you don’t have whole)

  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract

Ingredients for Orange Apple Simmering Potpourri

Ingredients for Orange Apple Simmering Potpourri

Here is a tip:  I got a cheap potpourri simmering pot with a lid (it used to be just a sauce pan, lol) at the Goodwill thrift store for less than $1 so I don’t have to use my good ones, just in case I ever burn the pan.  You can also use a small simmering Rival potpourri crock pot.

You can simmer this do-it-yourself potpourri for hours and hours, adding more water as needed.  Be careful to not let the pan go dry. I set the kitchen timer for 2-hours at a time to remind myself to check it.  You can reuse this the next day.  Just put the lid on it and store it in the fridge overnight, or stick it in the garage if it is cold out there.

 HomemadeDIYLiquidLaundryDetergent

See How to make Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent – DIY for pennies a load Part I for the recipe and How to make Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent – DIY for pennies a load Part II for instructions.

I made the laundry soap mix, and having let the mixture set overnight to ‘gel’,  I found it had turned a nice custard-like consistency.

Now mixing it with the water in the instructions made total sense, you must mix it in a jug 50% soap mixture with 50% water.

 1358353707363

This part was fun!  I took my son’s shirt and I went to my back yard and rubbed in my dirt, then I came in to my kitchen opened a packet of ketchup and spread it about, and finally I took some of the green smoothie we ate for breakfast and smeared it on as well.  I then let it sit and even put it in the microwave for a a few seconds to cook the stains.  Looked pretty dirty, thankfully my son doesn’t normally come home with anything close to this but we do have dirt and the occasional milk or condiment stains.  He is a boy after all.

1358357849020

I started my washer on a normal load, added 5 oz of my soap mixture, the test tshirt, one of my hoodies with more deodorant smeared in the arm pit area, and some regular clothes to make a full load and ran the cycle.   When it was done it came out smelling neutral/unscented, I didn’t scent with essential oil as the instrcuctions say you can, because with the Zote bar I didn’t want it to become anything overwhelming.  I might add lavender essential oil for my next load just to test it out.  I also did not add my regular fabric softener because I wanted to feel the clothes and smell them without anything interfering.

I was pleasantly surprised with the results!!!

1358364442645

My son’s tshirt all stains gone!!  (that is a wet spot cause I was impatient so I yanked it out of the dryer too soon, lol)

The load came out clean, the stains gone, I did a sniff test on my hoodie and didn’t smell any deodorant.  My clothes did not feel rough or coarse and no smells.  Am I sold?  Yes.  What will I do differently?  I will use my go-to softener because I do like a subtle smell.  I have also read that if you live an a hard water area you might want to double up on the borax.  Some ladies add OxyClean, what would I do?  If its my husbands work clothes or a set in stain I’d use what I normally do which is spray and wash on the stain.  This isn’t anything new I normally do that even when I use store bought detergent.  When I want a booster, I buy 1 2 3 powder (that is like OxyClean) at the 99 cent store.

This homemade detergent isn’t something to replace the detergent and the boosters and the stain sprays, this is a detergent and like any detergent it will sometimes need a helping hand that at least is what my expectations are for this homemade detergent.

All in all this is totally worth the 1 hour I spent grating and mixing it.  I have a nice supply of detergent in my garage and enough to make more when I run out.  Will I buy detergent again?  I don’t know but I really hope not because I want to spend money on more important stuff like my cruise fund ☺

What will I try next?  I’m contemplating homemade fabric softener…not sure yet.

Until next time, Princess T ☺

HomemadeDIYLiquidLaundryDetergent

Today I made the detergent.  See the Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent recipe from Part I.

All in all it took me maybe an hour between grating the two bars of soap and mixing them in a pot on my stove until it melted well.  Not very tedious or hard to do one bit.

Breakdown of my expenses:

3 pounds 7 ounces for washing soda = 55 oz (8 oz needed)  enough for 6 batches  $3.24

4 pounds 12 ounces for borax  =  76 oz (4 oz needed) enough for 19 batches  $3.38

Fels Naptha bar soap 97 cents

Zote bar soap 99 cents (optional)

(optional Bucket with lid (walmart) $3.75 one time purchase)

$7.59

What it produced:

256 loads at 5 oz a load and 10 gallons (5 gallon soap mixed in container with water 50/50)

.0296 or .03 cents a load.

Next batch, no need to buy the washing soda or the borax, total spent out of pocket $1.96 You can make 256 loads of detergent for under $2!

Some people add a bar of Ivory soap for scent instead of the Zote.  I added the Zote to get more bang for my buck as I already use it to pre-treat stains its amazing when you use it on heavily soiled clothing.  I found it today in Walmart but usually buy it when I go to the 99 cent store.

Have I tested it?  No, per the instructions it needs to sit overnight and then I will fill a container half way with the detergent mix and then add water.

So far what do I think?  Looks and smells really good once I do the wash test I may be completely sold on this detergent.  If you usually wash 10 loads of laundry a week, two batches of this laundry detergent would be enough for a year, that would be under $10 spent on laundry detergent.  I’m almost convinced.  Even if you double that amount its still $20 which is what one big jug of Tide costs for a year that’s a lot of savings.

Until tomorrow Princess T☺

Your supplies: washing soda, Borax and Fels Naptha bar soap.  Optional, add a bar of Zote for extra cleaning power.  The scent/color I used is the pink bar.

1358299167396

Cooking the grated bars of soap in 4 cups of water until melted.

The cooked melted and mixed batch, leave over night to set/gel.

Making Liquid Laundry Detergent at Home

Starting a new year means we have an opportunity to start our savings plan all over again.

I like you sometimes struggle, because life gets a little busier and less easy to manage.  This makes it hard to be able to nab all the deals I need. That being said the topic last night was how can we save more money?  A lot of the fans showed interest in DIY laundry soap.

I had researched this in the past and found a recipe that seems to work for a very frugally minded family, the Duggars.  I found this on the Duggar’s website and I’m sharing with you now.  I will attempt to make this myself tomorrow and will post a follow up with pictures of my success or failure.  I will tell you right now that I easily found all the ingredients at my local Walmart and I am adding a bar of the pink  ZOTE bar for an added kick which I have bought at the 99 cent store.   My husband has donated his trusty bucket (he doesn’t know it yet) and I have lavender essential oil already so I am adding that for fragrance, maybe.   This is new territory for me and I invite you to join me and post any suggestions you may have.

Here is the Duggar’s recipe for DIY Liquid Laundry soap:

4  Cups – hot tap water

1  Fels-Naptha soap bar

1 Cup – Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda

½ Cup Borax

– Grate the bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup (5 ounces) per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

Thank you to the Duggars for sharing this useful information.

I will post pictures tomorrow as this is my task for Tuesday!

~ Princess T

Don’t Drive Drunk this New Year’s Eve — Get a Sober Ride or a Tipsy Tow

This post may contain affiliate links, including Amazon.  Please visit our Privacy Policy and Disclosures.

There is NO excuse for Drunk Driving.  Even driving tipsy or buzzed is drunk driving!  The best plan is to plan ahead for a designated driver to get everyone home safe.  If you have too much fun this New Year’s Eve, please get a sober ride home.  And note to parents: Teens are more likely to drive intoxicated on New Year’s Eve than on any other night, so please also make sure that your kids know that they can call you at ANY time for a sober ride home.

If you need to keep someone else from driving, do your best to convince them to not drive, and to give you the keys.  Do not get into a physical altercation over the issue, but tell them that you are calling the police if they do not comply…and you MUST follow through.  Lives depend on making that call if need be.

AAA is offering a FREE ride home for you and your car through their Tipsy Tow program.  You do not have to be a AAA member to take advantage of this service.  It is not available in all areas, so please check for Tipsy Tow in your area and put the number in your cell phone now: 1-800-222-5347.  Tipsy Tow is available from 6 PM New Year’s Eve through 6 AM New Year’s Day.

If AAA is not available in your area, please check for a sober ride program near you, or search Google for “sober ride” and your area.  You can also order a car from Uber.

UPDATE: 12/19  Well it seems the backlash over the shady business that Instagram wanted to try has caused them to reverse their plans to take your pictures without your permission.

According to the LA Times article about Instagram’s reversal, “Instagram has said it will remove language from its new terms of service that would have allowed users’ photos to be part of advertisements that would run within the photo sharing social network.”

I for one am not impressed and will not be signing up a new account.  I think me decision to cancel was the right one and I would not be surprised if this issue comes up again.

_______________________________________

12/18/12:  I heard some disturbing news this morning and I just cancelled my Instagram account over it.

Instagram was recently purchased by Facebook.  And they just announced a new policy change that affects you.

According to this article on Cnet, “The new intellectual property policy, which takes effect on January 16, comes three months after Facebook completed its acquisition of the popular photo-sharing site.  Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out.  Under the new policy, Facebook claims the perpetual right to license all public Instagram photos to companies or any other organization, including for advertising purposes, which would effectively transform the Web site into the world’s largest stock photo agency.”

Basically this means that your photos, all your photos, taken with Instagram can be used without permission from you and without payment to you!

What do you think of this?  What are you going to do?

SO I often give gift cards for Holiday gifts to those who like them, BUT I think that they are somewhat impersonal…and that is why I always include a nice, small gift in addition to the card!  This Fashion Leopard Pattern Shawl Scarf Wrap for around $5 FREE Shipping would be perfect wrapped in tissue paper in a beautifully wrapped box, with the gift card tucked in with the scarf, and maybe a few nice perfume and lotion samples that I just happen to have around.  I would LOVE a gift like that, and I hope the the 2 people I just ordered this for are not reading today hehe.

THESE would also make a fabulous gifts with a gift card!  Around $5  + FREE Shipping!

If your family is like mine, you have to fill up a dozen or more little paper cups of ketchup, etc. and then you have to carry them all to the table without dropping one or more on the floor.

Here is a super easy (and kinda fun!) way to get more in that cup.  I am not sure if these were intended to do this or not, but it sure does work.  And it makes dipping so much easier since it is wider, great for curly fries and nuggets.

I LOVE shoes, and the taller the better for me since I am only 5’2″.  I was so excited to get my NEW boots from Zulily that I put them on with my capri pants and snapped a pic.  We later went out-to-dinner to celebrate their arrival.  Yes, I do love my shoes!  (These boots I paid I think $23 total for are no longer available, but check out Zulily for the current sales.)  I find SO many great deals at Zulily that I limit myself on how often I visit hehe.

Anyhow…when I was putting them away, I thought I would share my tip on how I store them so they stay nice.  Gotta show the shoes the proper love and respect you know!
