Surprising Things You Can Clean With Denture Tablets

You may be surprised to learn that denture tablets are great for cleaning more than just false teeth.  Who knew, right?  Here are several things that you can clean and freshen using denture cleaning tablets.  Stock up on a box or two next time you see a good sale.

Baked-On Food

Baked-on food can be a real pain, and sometimes soaking alone won’t get the food off. Fill the dish in question with warm water. Toss in a denture tablet or two for large dishes, and allow everything to soak for roughly 60 minutes. You may need to apply a bit of elbow grease, but not as much as required when you don’t use the tabs.

Coffee Makers

If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, try this the next time you need to clean your coffee maker. Fill the receptacle with warm water. Add two denture tablets and allow the coffee maker to go through a complete cycle. Rinse it out. Repeat, using clean water, for two more cycles to rinse thouroughly.

Smelly Shoes

The method of cleaning smelly shoes is similar to cleaning other things mentioned here. Fill your sink with warm water. Add up to three denture tablets. Let the shoes soak for up to one hour and rinse them thoroughly.  For best results, air dry.

Narrow Vases

This tip is more than a little bit ingenious. That gunk that is left when you are done with flowers in a vase is unsightly.  Fill the container with warm water. Pop in one tablet. After a couple of hours, the vase (or narrow bottle) should magically rinse clean. A bit of shaking on your part may be necessary.

Ceramic Tile

Add three or four denture tablets to a spray bottle of warm water. Spray on ceramic tile and allow it to sit for approximately 30 minutes. Rinse and dry as you normally do.

Tomato-Stained Plastic Containers

Don’t throw away your favorite plastic container, just because it happens to be tomato stained from your favorite red sauce. Fill it with warm water. Add a denture tablet. After 60 minutes or so, the stains should wash away with hot, soapy water or a run it through the dishwasher on the top rack.

Now, you have a good reason to stock up on denture tablets. Compared to some other cleaners, they’re easy on the budget and aren’t full of harmful chemicals. So, what are you waiting for? … get cleaning!

The Queen Got a New Crown in ONE day! See my dental visit … I was nervous!!

Laughing woman smile with great teeth.

Recently I had to have some dental work done. I’ve never had to have much more than regular cleaning and a few fillings done before, other than having my wisdom teeth out when I was in high school, which was NOT pleasant.  So while I was curious, I was also pretty nervous to find out that I needed a crown done – actually I would need a total of three. My old silver fillings had failed and could not be replaced.  NOW, No one enjoys having dental work done, right?  And if you do, well I am not sure you are quite normal.  But, I needed the work done, and I gathered up my courage and made the appointment for the first crown.  I was very excited to learn that I would have a complete (not temporary) crown in ONE visit.  How lucky that I have found the most amazing dentist, and she and the wonderful staff at Fenton Family Dentistry helped me through the process!  Fast forward to the Day of the Crown.  I was nervous.  The office staff was amazing at calming my nerves from the moment that I checked in. The dentist, Dr. Jessica Nieva, could not be more wonderful.  She was professional, she explained everything that would happen, and was just as great at calming my nerves as the office staff. In other words, Fenton Family Dentistry really knows the meaning of “chairside manner!”  We were chatting like long lost friends in no time.

Before I knew it, I was leaned back and we got started!  I DID choose the laughing gas so that I was more relaxed, and I am glad that I did.

2015-10-23 10.18.15

YES, I was feeling a bit high from the gas!

Let’s talk tech.  The process that they used to do my crown is called CEREC or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The method was created by Prof. Werner H. Mörmann and Dr. Marco Brandestini waaay back in 1980 (I was 9, around the time I got my first filling!) and has been updated and modernized from using 2D technology to 3D technology.  This has revolutionized inlays, crowns, onlays and veneers!  If you’ve never seen it in action, the process is actually really cool.  They design a virtual model (or imprint) of your mouth based on scans that they have taken.  That means NOT MORE disgusting and uncomfortable impressions with that goopy stuff.  Can you tell I am not a fan?  It always made me gag.  I had braces and had plenty of impressions made.  This was painless and fast, like a magic wand that measures your teeth exactly.

2015-10-23 11.28.41

The dentist or technician then designs the dental restoration piece aka my crown on a computer and sends it off to the milling machine on site to manufacture what you need.

2015-10-23 11.55.01

Within 20 minutes or so, the milling machine makes the tooth.  All that is left is painting it to match your own teeth, curing the paint, then implanting the crown in your mouth! From the start of the design to the manufacturing of the tooth, it’s all digital and I was in and out in a few hours with a brand new tooth! It was incredibly cool to see the tooth being made in the office.  In the past they’ve had to order from a dental lab for that type of thing and you have to come back for your permanent crown. And really, how often do you actually get to see a tooth being made? That’s not quite an everyday occurrence and I have to admit that I loved watching it.  I used to work in the office of a machine shop, so I am familiar with milling machines, but not one that fits on a counter.  Technology is SO COOL!  Dr. Nieva has definitely invested in the equipment to make sure that the patient has the best possible experience, and the training for her staff to use it.

2015-10-23 12.00.52

YES, that is MY TOOTH being made!

One of the main reasons I am so thrilled with my experience is how quickly it was all done.  From start to finish, the entire process only took around 2 and a half hours.  I’m a busy woman, so to be able to have the entire procedure done and be out the door in under 3 hours was a huge bonus for me.  Even though it was done efficiently, the staff stayed professional and friendly, and just as amazing the entire time.

The final result is one that I am incredibly pleased with. I was pretty numb for a few hours.  I had minor discomfort for two days.  The only pain I had was where the gum was pulled away to accommodate the new tooth, but that healed in a few days because I followed the clear post-op care instructions.   I love that my tooth is no longer sensitive to cold, and I adore the fact that the color of the crown matches my own tooth color exactly.  I cannot tell it from my own original tooth.  I’m sure that isn’t a hugely important factor for some with a molar, but for me, I like knowing that I don’t have a tooth that is lighter or darker than my own. It makes smiling easier knowing that the crown matches and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb. Overall though, I’d say despite my apprehension, that the entire experience was not bad at all.  Imagine that!  Dental work that isn’t quite as bad as expected.

If you’ve been putting off getting dental work done, please don’t keep waiting! Sure, some of it can be uncomfortable, but hopefully, you’ll have an awesome experience and dentist like I do, and there are options that will help you through the procedures like nitrous gas.  There’s no sense in sitting around with a painful or embarrassing tooth that needs work when you can get it fixed as quickly and easily as mine was! If you’re in the St. Louis area and are looking for a new dentist, I cannot recommend Fenton Family Dentistry enough! They can be reached on their website or by phone at (636) 326-7633 with any questions that you might have, or to book your own appointment!  I have been so pleased with the quality of the care I have gotten over a few cleanings and now all THREE crowns and TWO replaced fillings, that my husband returned to the dentist after 20 years away.  His teeth were getting bad.  He has had lots done to make HIM smile again.  He is even more handsome now!  Thank you, Dr. Nieva and your staff!  You really DO change lives.

credit report pic

I don’t do resolutions but the start of a New Year is a good time to take a good look at yourself and take care of some housekeeping.  With that in mind I want to share one bit of advice.  As some of you are aware of I work a real gig in the outside world that has to do with consumer credit.  I can tell you a lot of people are SHOCKED when they are denied for credit and do not have any idea what is on their credit report.

So before we think about Tax Season and of Refunds lets take a minute and check our credit health.  Now is a good time to take a good hard look at our circumstances and take the necessary steps to end 2014 on a more positive note.  We all get behind or make mistakes, trust me I sure have and so instead of paying someone to help fix your credit its a good idea to see what free resources we have available to us so we can improve our standing.

Take a moment and get your free annual credit report.

The website has a lot of really great information that in this day and age of hackers and stolen identities we need to keep tabs on for our own future.  If you have something to clear up or pay down its a good time of year to take positive steps to reach these goals.

Oh and keep up with us at the Couponista Queen.  We will be helping you all year long save as much as you can so you can not only take control of your finances and live with more wiggle room but maybe pay and fix some blemishes on your credit report.

Busy Kids, Happy Meals – Make a DIY Placemat Puzzle Craft

DIY Placemat Puzzle

Make meals more fun with this interactive placemat puzzle.  Easy to make with supervision from ages 3+.  Cheap and fun craft for kids.

If you like this craft, please Share it or Pin Busy Kids, Happy Meals – DIY Placemat Puzzle on Pinterest

This is the time of year when you have more kids over to your house for dinner or snacks.  But sometimes you don’t have little ones anymore so what are you going to do? Hand them your iPad while taking a few Advils for the migraine you are going to have worrying about your tablet?  LOL  you need a more creative entertaining solution.  When my kids were little I always carried around a lot of stuff but sometimes you just can’t bring the right things with you.   If you are the  hostess you want to make even the youngest guest feel at home so Mom and kick back and relax a bit.

Have a placemat that will keep them busy and won’t set you back $10 ☺!

I’ve seen this made only with the foamy placemats the flat plastic ones will have sharp edges so don’t use those.

I stopped by the 99 Cent Store today and they had lots of festive ones to choose from for 99 Cents so the price is right, especially if its not a present, and you are going to have more then one child over so you don’t want to break the bank.  I’ve seen people draw out pieces that look like puzzles so it will depend on your level of craftiness.  If you are a novice crafter like me this will be perfect.    I’d use cookie cutters and shapes you have or can easily draw, larger pieces for younger kids and kids 3-5 maybe smaller shapes or letters?  If you choose a snow flake pattern like this how about using circles to make a snowman?

What are you going to need?

Cheap foamy placemats

exacto, utility or craft knife and a safe surface to cut on

marker

cookie cutter, ruler, anything you can use to make a shape

15 minutes ☺

Make sure to cut out the shapes for all of the younger kids, and closely supervise the older ones.

1486511_10151899520680674_1048318380_o

I made a real simple one, 4 shapes I think for a young toddler.  You can run with this craft and make it your own.  Once it all fits back in place to the frame of the puzzle they can eat on top of it and then take it home!  I like this method because it holds a frame to pop in the shapes but you can draw interlocking puzzle shapes for a preschooler.

Tada!
