Spring Forward | Set your clocks ahead for DST…but do you know why?

The time has come (for most of us) to once again change the clocks.  This time we set them ahead one hour for Daylight Savings Time (DST).
The part I hate is that when we “Spring forward” at 2 AM  we lose an hour of sleep.

First introduced during the First World War, an early goal of DST was to reduce evening usage (and therefore the cost) of incandescent lighting (formerly the largest use of electricity) by extending the daylight hours.  I love that it was a frugal purpose!  Now, though, we use electricity for anything and everything…so though the primary goal of saving electricity is no longer truly applicable, we still enjoy those extra hours of daylight.  Remember to set your clocks ahead 1 hour before you go to bed tonight, and get ready because this means Summer is coming!  And that makes ME happy enough to not mind losing that hour of precious sleep.
P.S. This is also an awesome time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors!
