Instagram

UPDATE: 12/19  Well it seems the backlash over the shady business that Instagram wanted to try has caused them to reverse their plans to take your pictures without your permission.

According to the LA Times article about Instagram’s reversal, “Instagram has said it will remove language from its new terms of service that would have allowed users’ photos to be part of advertisements that would run within the photo sharing social network.”

I for one am not impressed and will not be signing up a new account.  I think me decision to cancel was the right one and I would not be surprised if this issue comes up again.

12/18/12:  I heard some disturbing news this morning and I just cancelled my Instagram account over it.

Instagram was recently purchased by Facebook.  And they just announced a new policy change that affects you.

According to this article on Cnet, “The new intellectual property policy, which takes effect on January 16, comes three months after Facebook completed its acquisition of the popular photo-sharing site.  Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out.  Under the new policy, Facebook claims the perpetual right to license all public Instagram photos to companies or any other organization, including for advertising purposes, which would effectively transform the Web site into the world’s largest stock photo agency.”

Basically this means that your photos, all your photos, taken with Instagram can be used without permission from you and without payment to you!

What do you think of this?  What are you going to do?

Leopard Print Scarf

SO I often give gift cards for Holiday gifts to those who like them, BUT I think that they are somewhat impersonal…and that is why I always include a nice, small gift in addition to the card!  This Fashion Leopard Pattern Shawl Scarf Wrap for around $5 FREE Shipping would be perfect wrapped in tissue paper in a beautifully wrapped box, with the gift card tucked in with the scarf, and maybe a few nice perfume and lotion samples that I just happen to have around.  I would LOVE a gift like that, and I hope the the 2 people I just ordered this for are not reading today hehe.

THESE would also make a fabulous gifts with a gift card!  Around $5  + FREE Shipping!

Facebook has made a change I actually LIKE!  You can now be notified when a page you want to see posts!  Check it out…

Hover over the LIKE button and check Get Notifications and make sure the Show in News Feed is also checked for pages that you want to see.

And please add Couponista Queen to your  notifications so you never miss another deal.

Here is another trick I learned!

There is a Facebook link that will show you ALL of your fan pages in your news feed!  WOW right?  This link shows your Facebook without Edgerank.  Edgerank is Facebook’s algorithm that decides out of all the things it can show you, what you might most want to see, and thus you never see everything you could see or that you may want to see.

I love the look of REAL flickering candles in a Jack O’Lantern, but sometimes the candle won’t burn evenly because the pumpkin doesn’t sit level.  Check out this awesome idea for lighting your Jack O’Lantern in a safe way but still using candles.

How to get those little paper cups to hold more ketchup!

If your family is like mine, you have to fill up a dozen or more little paper cups of ketchup, etc. and then you have to carry them all to the table without dropping one or more on the floor.

Here is a super easy (and kinda fun!) way to get more in that cup.  I am not sure if these were intended to do this or not, but it sure does work.  And it makes dipping so much easier since it is wider, great for curly fries and nuggets.

Homemade Hummingbird Nectar Recipe to Feed Hummingbirds

This post may contain affiliate links, including Amazon.  Please visit our Privacy Policy and Disclosures.

Hummingbirds are awesome to watch, and easy to feed.  Hummingbirds eat insects, but nectar is their favorite.  Fill a feeder and you will soon have them flying every which way.  Many hummingbirds return to the same feeder year after year, so make a habit of keeping a feeder up from early Spring to late Fall.

There is no point in wasting money on expensive store-bought nectar when you can easily make your own at home, fast and frugal!

Find out what kinds of Hummingbirds are visiting your feeder.  Check out the Hummingbird Identifier.

Homemade Hummingbird Nectar

First, start with a clean feeder.  Wash it in hot, soapy water and rinse well.

NEVER use any chemicals on the feeder as this could harm the birds.

Cleaning the Hummingbird Feeder

To make the nectar, you will need:

  • 1 Cup of granulated white sugar.  Only use white sugar.  Chemicals in artificial sweeteners can harm the birds, and brown sugar, honey, etc. can make the mix go sour and do not provide the best nutrition.

  • 4 Cups of Water (If you have hard water, consider distilled or bottled)

  • This 4:1 ratio most closely resembles the sugar levels in natural nectar.

Ingredients for Hummingbird Nectar

I never add food coloring as this could harm the birds.  It is not necessary to color the water red, they will find the Hummingbird food without it!  Most feeders are red already, so clear nectar is easier to make anyhow.

TIP: Cut the recipe in half if you have a small feeder or don’t use as much.  I use a 16-ounce plastic feeder, but they come in all sizes, shapes, and materials.  16-ounce feeders are plenty big enough to feed a crowd without wasting nectar.  You can also put less in a larger feeder.  Pay attention to how much you use, and adjust accordingly.

Check out Hummingbird Feeders on Amazon

 Heating Hummingbird Nectar

Over heat, dissolve the sugar into the water.  Bring it to a hard boil for a minute or two.  Remove from heat and allow to cool completely before filling the feeder.

Unused nectar will keep in the fridge for 2 days.  Make sure that you also clean the container you keep the refrigerated nectar in before you refill it.

Clean the feeder and refill it with clean nectar every 2 days.  Hummingbirds can be harmed by the mold that grows in a dirty feeder, so make sure to clean it well and often.  I use an old toothbrush and a bottle brush to get in all the nooks and crannies.

Keep the feeder full.  Birds may not return to an empty feeder.

Make your own Food and Juice for Baby Alive Dolls – For Just pennies!

This post may contain affiliate links, including Amazon.  Please visit our Privacy Policy and Disclosures.

Baby Alive dolls are very popular with the preschool set.  If you have priced the Baby Alive food and juice packs…well, you see why I set out to find a cheap substitute!  The Baby Alive Doll Food and Diapers Super Refill Pack, for example, is pretty costly.  Especially when my daughter can go through them fast!

Make the food and juice yourself!  This works with other baby dolls that eat and drink, also.

To make the Baby Alive Food, mix together:

3 Tablespoons of baking soda, 3 Tablespoons of plain tap water, and 1-3 drops of food coloring.  Use yellow for bananas, green for green beans, etc.

To make the Baby Alive Juice:

Simply mix together 1 cup plain tap water and 2-3 drops food coloring.

ALSO here are some alternative ideas from readers!  Thank you!

“My daughter colors little piece of napkins with markers and mixes in water for juice.”

“For food got a cheap box of baby cereal and add the juice for the flavor she wants for it.”

How easy and frugal is that???  Kids like helping make the food and juice, with adult supervision of course.  Unless you trust a toddler with food color, in which case, good luck and send pics of the mess!

Enjoy this frugal tip!
